Overview

Every hotel, school and office needs someone who can diagnose a fault, fix what is safely within their competence, and know exactly where that competence ends.

This programme builds that breadth — basic electrical, plumbing, carpentry and finishing work — alongside the planned maintenance and permit discipline that keeps a building compliant.

How you are assessed

Practical competence is assessed in person by a qualified assessor against written criteria. No practical competence is assessed online.

Workplace observation

Live maintenance tasks observed across at least three trade areas

Job record portfolio

Real job sheets, checklists and planned maintenance records

Fault diagnosis assessment

Unseen faults diagnosed and either resolved or correctly escalated

Professional discussion

Recorded questioning on safety, isolation and competence limits

Entry requirements

  • 18 years or older at the start of the programme
  • Senior Four (UCE) or equivalent — or recognition of prior learning for maintenance workers
  • Working English sufficient for job records and safety documents
  • Physical capability for maintenance work

Learners receive the ASIEA award and the evidence behind it. External certification is being sought: the units, notional hours and assessment on this page are written so a certification body can map them to its own qualifications.
