Overview

Off-grid and hybrid solar is now standard infrastructure across East Africa, and badly installed systems are widespread. DC arc faults, undersized cabling and unsupported battery installations are the common failures.

This programme trains correct sizing, safe DC working, mechanical mounting and commissioning, then assesses installation and performance testing on real systems.

What you study

7 units · 360 notional hours. Hours shown are the notional allocation used for planning and progression.

01
Solar Resource & System Types

Irradiance, orientation, shading, and off-grid, grid-tied and hybrid architectures.

45h
02
DC Safety & Electrical Fundamentals

DC arc risk, isolation, string voltages, protection, earthing and surge protection.

55h
03
Sizing & System Design

Load assessment, array and battery sizing, inverter selection and cable calculation.

65h
04
Mechanical Mounting & Roof Work

Roof types, structural considerations, mounting systems, weatherproofing and working at height.

60h
05
Battery Storage & Charge Control

Battery chemistries, ventilation, charge controllers, protection and safe handling.

55h
06
Commissioning & Performance Testing

String testing, insulation resistance, inverter configuration, handover and documentation.

45h
07
Maintenance & Fault Finding

Monitoring, cleaning, underperformance diagnosis, and battery and inverter faults.

35h

How you are assessed

Practical competence is assessed in person by a qualified assessor against written criteria. No practical competence is assessed online.

Design assignment

A system sized and specified for a real site load profile

Practical installation assessment

An array and battery system installed and commissioned under assessment

Commissioning records

String test and performance data recorded to standard

Fault diagnosis assessment

Underperformance and planted faults diagnosed and rectified

Knowledge assessment

DC safety, sizing and storage, invigilated

Entry requirements

  • 18 years or older at the start of the programme
  • Senior Four (UCE) or equivalent with adequate mathematics
  • An electrical background is an advantage but not required
  • Physical capability for roof work and availability for in-person blocks

Certification

Learners receive the ASIEA award and the evidence behind it. External certification is being sought: the units, notional hours and assessment on this page are written so a certification body can map them to its own qualifications.
