Overview
Plumbing failures are expensive because they are invisible until the damage is done. This programme trains the jointing discipline and pressure testing that stop that happening, alongside the hygiene rules that protect drinking water.
Learners install and commission real systems and are assessed on watertightness and compliance rather than on appearance alone.
What you study
7 units · 500 notional hours. Hours shown are the notional allocation used for planning and progression.
Pressure, flow, thermal expansion, corrosion and material selection.
Risk assessment, hot works, working at height, confined spaces and isolation.
Copper, plastic and steel jointing methods, bending, bracketing and routing.
Supply, storage, distribution, hot water generation, controls and water hygiene.
Appliances, traps, waste pipework, ventilation of stacks and testing for soundness.
Pressure testing, flushing, disinfection, performance checks and records.
Leaks, blockages, pressure and temperature faults, repair and re-test.
How you are assessed
Practical competence is assessed in person by a qualified assessor against written criteria. No practical competence is assessed online.
A full system installed, pressure tested and commissioned under assessment
Set joints produced in each material and tested for soundness
Test and disinfection records completed to standard
Planted faults diagnosed, repaired and re-tested
Science, regulations and water hygiene, invigilated

Certification
Learners receive the ASIEA award and the evidence behind it. External certification is being sought: the units, notional hours and assessment on this page are written so a certification body can map them to its own qualifications.
